In response to the questions raised by the author of “Twitter Protest, Using Technology to Create Social Change”, I must say this; all of the information is remarkably persuasive. Honestly, the delivery made me want to believe everything that was posted in her blog and in the videos. I believe it; it being the information presented in both of the videos, but I don’t believe all of it.

Some of the information just seems too good or too speculative to fully believe, like some of the massive numbers that did not seem exact, but just seemed like rough estimates that may have been close to the actual numbers. Other numbers like the “274 babies being born in China during the first video” I actually believe because the number just appeared to be more believable and true. I can also believe the information about Facebook and how it reached 50 million users in only two years because I know that almost all if not all of my friends have a Facebook account. Literally now if a person does not have a Facebook account, I immediately think that they are weird or that something is wrong with them. If I can’t find someone on Facebook, then I try to find them on MySpace, then on Twitter. If all that fails, then I just believe that person is “out of the loop,” and is missing out on a lot of information.

The Dove commercial is absolutely believable because there are programs like Photoshop that I have used that are able to digitally transform any photo of a person or thing; distorting and changing the original to make it seem more attractive to a certain audience or group of people. I have profile pictures on my MySpace account that are digitally remodeled to make me resemble President Obama on posters and magazines during his Presidential campaign.

The blog really didn’t appeal to me but the video presentations did. For some reason, the information in the blog was not as believable as the material shown in the videos. I can say this now, but after reading the blog and watching the videos I can only remember the information from the videos vividly. What does this all mean? It all means that our world is evolving more rapidly than ever before. Humans are becoming wiser, smarter, faster, more innovative and more advanced in every facet of technology, science, and life. The world is changing, we just have to keep up.

It literally took me about 2 weeks to complete the given task of meeting and talking to five strangers. On campus I have the tendency of getting so caught up in my work that I rarely use my time to go out and meet new people, but now that I have done this assignment I will recap what happened.

The first new person I met was actually a fellow classmate of mine in one of my honors lectures. Talking to her, made me feel very uneasy initially, which is the usual for me. I always am cautious when meeting new people, especially girls, to not let off too much information. The strange thing is though after I talked to her the first time for about ten minutes after class, I have seen her more often on campus than I did before. It seems weird sometimes because now I think I see her too often, but she is a very nice person. Before I met her, I thought that she was a snobby person, but in fact she was a very personable individual and likes talking to people, sharing her ideas.

The second person I talked to was a professor in the Smith School of Business. This experience was not as pleasant as my first though. The professor seemed annoyed with my interaction with him. He seemed to be in a hurry to get away from me, like he had something very important to do, even though I walked into his office during his scheduled office hours. When I was actually talking to him, I decided to just ask questions about the school and scheduling, believing that he could help me with it, however, it turned out that he really did not have much new knowledge to offer me, and spoke down to me occasionally.

The next two people I decided to talk to were actually twins on campus. It was quite strange talking to the both of them because even though they were very similar in appearance and style of speech, they were very different in terms of personality and activities liked. Speaking with the “older” twin, he came off as being very arrogant about his abilities, and was very eager to talk and get his opinion across. The “younger” twin definitely was the more shy of the two. He was more listening oriented, and rarely spoke out of turn, so I think it was more enjoyable talking to him.

The last individual I met is a great friend of my roommate whom I had never met before. Seeing that I think my roommate is a pretty awesome person, I decided to introduce myself to his friend when she came to the dorm the next time. Now I immediately realized that she was a loud person, very outspoken to say the least, and some people may take this as her being annoying, but after I talked to her about, of all things, football for a while she seemed like a really cool person. She actually ended up helping me out with my communications speech that night that I met her, and I received an A on that assignment, so I think I’ll keep talking to her because she helps me out a lot.

All in all, the people who I met really surprised because I thought that people were generally unfriendly and mean. I thought that people did not want to reveal themselves to others, so I acted that way and kept to myself. Now I realize though that sometimes just introducing myself to new people can go a very long way in meeting new people. Even though I still do not know that many people on campus, I feel more confident in putting myself out there and trying to make new friends and showing what I have to offer to different individuals.

Picture yourself wearing a shirt that makes such a definitive statement, “I’m Not Property.” What could this mean in today’s society? Is what this shirt stands for in reality true? What is the nature of the question posed?

The main point here is are people considered property, and are they treated the same as anything owned by a person like a house. “I’m Not Property” means that no one can use that person for their own likeness and choosing. No one can use another to make themselves feel more comfortable, or use others to do things that they are supposed to do. People are not to manipulate others, and use them like products.

This shirt has a negative connotation to it because the thought of using anyone as property now is harshly condemned by society. In effect, using a person as property is proclaiming that they are a slave which is illegal in the United States and most other countries. The idea of using a person as property is immoral. However this shirt has a strong moral background, and a strong stance against the use of people as property. The shirt itself although seemingly ugly in nature is in fact very educational and beneficial to society. The nature of this shirt is positive because it protects and promotes that people have the freedom of choice in the world.

The cell phone has become a necessity in society today; and its impact has changed the ways people communicate and correspond with one another. The challenge I was faced with was whether or not I could make it through a whole day without using my cell phone for any reason. My answer to this question/challenge is; No, I cannot go a whole day without using my cell phone.

When I did attempt to go the day without using my cell phone, I realized that I could not do it because of its importance to my daily life. The reason I am able to wake up in the morning is because my cell phone is my version of an alarm clock. After I actually get up to start my day, the first thing I do is check my phone for any messages or missed phone calls that I might have received over night. In certain classes I check my cell phone for text messages, and also use it as a timekeeper so that I know when class is over. I also use it as a timekeeper when taking tests and doing other assignments. After my classes were over this day, I tried going the rest of the day without my cell phone to see if I could just make it a little while without using it. This was also a failed attempt.

Even after I turned my phone off and started doing my homework, I was anxious to see what messages I had received. I gave in to the pressure and turned my phone back on, and started communicating with the people who had called me and texted me. This continued on for the rest of the night, and I even fell asleep with the phone in my hand, realizing this when I woke up the next morning.

The reasons I cannot go a whole day, or even an extended period of time without my cell phone, are: my constant desire to communicate with other people, my fear of missing important calls or messages, and my immediate access to the internet and web browsers on my phone. I am a people person, I like making new friends, and talking to different people to understand how they think and how they interact with others around them. Being this way, the cell phone allows me to be in constant interaction and communication with other people, by way of texting or talking. Almost every minute of the day, I am having a texting conversation with one of my friends or contacts in my phone just exchanging information and news that may be interesting for the other person to know. I also talk a lot on my phone, and this just adds to the struggle of trying to not use my phone.

I believe without my phone that I am going to miss something important that someone was trying to tell me or text me. The times I do not have my phone with me, I often times feel “naked” because my phone is a strong link of mine to the outside world, and without it most of my life, in terms of communication, is gone. I have no way of reaching certain important people in my life. My cell phone has the ability of letting me know how about at least 500 of my friends are feeling and doing throughout the day because I can use it to access the internet and websites like MySpace and Facebook. Without my cell phone I feel hopeless, and feel disconnected from the world because I cannot find out what may be going on with other people.

All in all, I cannot go a whole day without my cell phone. It is my lifeline. It is what keeps me connected to the people I know that I don’t see everyday. It helps me live easier because I can communicate with so many different types of people. Plus it helps me everyday with other things like: its use as an alarm clock, its use as a task scheduler, its use of a note taker and web browser. My phone is too important for me to not use or let go.

Contrary to what many people believe, a community constitutes a group of people who share a common interest or ideals, and not just common territory. There are many types of communities that are present in today’s society. There is the most known type of community that is the physical community. This involves people who live near each other and share the same territorial space somehow. An example of this would be the Denton community at the University of Maryland College Park; the students living in the residence halls are a community of their own. What’s unique about this type of community is that the participants in the community are able to physically interact with each other, and not only communicate through verbal language but also through nonverbal language.

Another form of a community would be a group of people who have similiar interests in society, this includes the online community as well. People naturally form bonds with others who think and feel the same as they do about topics. This is notable is in politics where people create communities or parties with others centered around the shared ideals they have. Online communities are legitimate because this same aspect of community can be applied. Technology has advanced and increased the ways people can communicate with different people, primarily through internet chats and websites. Technology has invented a different way for a community to be formed because the internet spans around the world, which brings about the possibility that people who reside far away from each other can create communities. All Facebook users are part of a community because they all share information with each other. Many of the users ever form groups within the community to create specific kinds of sub-communities to find more people who agree with their beliefs. Online communities mainly make use of “verbal” communication or written word, however, video chats can foster an environment where nonverbal communication can also take place. In most cases though, nonverbal communication is not present. Communities can be formed without having the traditional ideas of what a community has present, like the shared physical and living territory.

The reasons both of these examples are communities are because each has an open line of communication, which is needed for a community to be a present. A community is not present if communication between people cannot take place. Members of the community must be able to interact with each other in some way, creating an instance where an exchange ideas or thoughts takes place. Both communities utilize the “interactional” model of communication which details that there is a messenger whom sends a message to the receiver, and in turn the receiver sends feedback to the messenger after interpreting the message. This takes place online in chat rooms, on social networking sites like Facebook, through emails, and with posted online videos. Another reason both the physical and online community fall under the category of community is because each has its own foundational ideal that keeps the people connected. Physical communities are connected with land, online communities are connected with ideas through the internet.

In reference to that quote from the work of Chester and Breterton, I agree with their theory that who we are and how we act in cyberspace is reflective of how we behave in the real world. Personally this sounds right to me because, as I said in the class discussion, I tend to be the same type of person online as I am offline. The only difference between my “offline self” and my “online self” is the fact that offline I can make many jokes that are understood by the people I am around, and not have to totally worry about offending anyone. Even in more serious matters like arguments and discussions, my personality does not change, if I have evidence and facts to support my claim, I will go back and forth with whomever I am debating with until I think I get my point across or the conversation is over. From this I conclude based on my own experience that Chester and Breterton are right in suggesting that our cyberspace personality is developed and no different from our real world personality.

Many people often argue however that they are more open and argumentative online than they are offline, which may yield them to believe that they have two separate personalities online and offline. Although it may be true that people are more willing to say things and argue online, this does not mean that they are a different person online. This just means they are willing to say more things online because there are no threats of confrontation. The individual online does not see the immediate threat of confrontation because they are hidden behind a screen, and they do not perceive or visualize the person they are arguing with, even if they are friends with or are familiar with the person in real life. The threat of getting hurt does not seem real or apparent to them.
